Environmental Stress Screening

ESS testing consists of applying stimuli to a functioning unit in the form of vibration and burn-in. The applied stimuli must be severe enough to precipitate the defects without causing harm to or reducing the useful life of the product under test. The application of environmental stresses will identify the latent defects. Viable Power’s facility and team of experts are available to assist with your ESS testing requirements.

Any company working on military aerospace, defense and naval sectors contracts is contractually required to perform thorough ESS testing to conform to MIL-HBBK-2164. Businesses that make components for the aeronautics sector have to conform to FAA regulations and other industry standards also require ESS testing. Our vibration system, temperature and temperature/humidity chambers can be programmed to meet the specified requirements.

Our Testing Equipment

Viable Power’s test equipment includes a Thermotron DSX-4000/24-915/1 electrodynamic shaker, a 16 cu ft, 10 Hp dual stage compressor Cincinnati Sub-Zero temperature chamber and a 16 cu ft, 10 Hp dual stage compressor Cincinnati Sub-Zero temperature/humidity chamber. Our test equipment can be programmed to meet the requirements defined in MIL-STD-810, RTCA-DO-160, MIL-HDBK-2164A, and others. Our equipment is regularly calibrated with results traceable to NIST. Calibration certificates are available.

Temperature & Humidity Testing

Temperature and humidity testing determines how products perform under severe conditions such as extreme high or low temperatures and high and fluctuating humidity. The wider the extremes and variations, the greater the applied environmental stress on the product.

Testing determines if a product is capable to withstand the environment that it has been designed to operate in. The intent is to induce failures in a product in the design phase to improve the design and result in a more robust product. Temperature screening is performed during production to induce infant mortality of components. The goal of environmental testing is to improve product quality.

Vibration Testing

Vibration testing is key to a quality product. The required application environment; frequency range and acceleration levels, is applied to the product during the development phase to confirm that the design is suitable for the intended environment. This may include random spectrum or a sine survey to identify any resonances.

Vibration screening is performed during production to identify any manufacturing or assembly defects. The screening environment is not as harsh as the application environment, as extended exposure to higher vibration levels reduces the useful life of the product. The goal of environmental testing is to improve product quality.
